Teach Your Baby To Swim

Many parents are discovering the art of teaching their baby to swim. Not only is it fun for your baby to swim, bond with you, and play with other babies, it is a great way for you to interact with other parents as well.

It was only discovered in the 1960's that babies were able to swim independently underwater. But since then, it has been learned that it promotes self-confidence and personal development - physical and emotional. It gives your baby a calming, zero-gravity environment to move freely where they otherwise could not on land. This is incredibly beneficial to babies with Downs Syndrome and Cerebral Palsy.

Benefits of teaching your baby to swim

The benefits of baby swimming include; increased motor development, social skills and  intelligence, increased concentration, alertness, and perceptual abilities, and improved nap  time and night time sleep patterns. Babies who learn how to swim have been known to walk  earlier as well, due to their increased muscle control.
It's only natural for a baby to feel comfortable and happy in the warm water. You don't have  to worry about your child breathing, because they automatically hold their breath while  underwater. This is called the "mammalian dive reflex". After all, they did spend their first 9  months in fluid.
If you have your own pool, it is up to you as a parent to decide when you want your baby to start swimming. There is no age limit. They can even start right after birth. Some classes  however, ask that you wait until they are 3 months. Others recommend you start as early as possible. But keep in mind, the longer you wait, their confidence in the water decreases.
Closer to their first year, babies can actually develop a fear of water if they are not familiar with it. You should never force your child to learn if they don't want to. This will only result in a stressful situation for your child which could become a problem later on.

Be patient

Don't expect your baby to start swimming like a pro right away. It takes time and patience. But even though they can't swim on the water's surface until they are about three, they can swim  for short distances under the water with the help and encouragement of their parent. Have an underwater camera available to capture that special moment.
Check with your local community swimming pool to see if they have classes available. You and your new baby will love it.

How to Calm a Screaming Baby

Instructions.
1.  Swaddle your baby tightly. This may take several attempts if he/she is very frustrated, but if the baby is not swaddled in a tight way, the rest simply will not work.

  1. 2. Pick up your swaddled baby and rock/swing him/her vigorously. Make sure to hold your baby tightly to your chest so that there's no risk of dropping her/him, but you must make the swinging motion vigorous!
    3. Make loud white noise! You can "shush", turn on a vacuum, turn on the blow dryer, or turn on another similar electronic. The key is that it is loud and constant. Continue until the screaming slows down and the baby seems to be getting at least a little bit calmer.
    4. Once the baby shows signs of becoming a litte calmer, either give him/her a pacifier, or nurse your baby. Make sure you wait until the baby is calmed down a bit, otherwise the pacifier won't help, and the baby may not even accept it.
    5. Once the baby has calmed down and is sucking on the pacifier, hold him/her a little bit longer before you move on to your next activity. If the baby starts screaming again after putting him/her down, be aware that there may be another problem, such as illness.

    • Stay calm! If you're not calm, you will not be able to follow the steps correctly. Don't give up! This may take 2-3 tries, but it WILL work, if you do it correctly. If you feel you are losing control of your emotions, place the baby in a safe place (such as a crib) and walk away from the room to a place where you can gather your bearings and calm down. Your baby needs you at your best, andy ou will be much more effective if you feel like you have some sense of control.

Protecting Your Baby From The Sun

If your baby is six months or younger, you'll need to protect them from direct sunlight at all times. If they're older than six months, they can handle a litte more sun, but you still need to be very careful as they sunburn a lot faster than adults.

Protecting your baby from the sun will prevent sunburn as well as long-term damage such as premature wrinkles, aging, and more serious effects like melanoma.
As long as you follow these guidelines, you can still venture out into the sun with your baby and enjoy the good weather:
  • Talk to your doctor about using a sunscreen on your baby. They should be able to recommend one that's safe, but be sure to test it on a small area of baby's skin before applying it all over.
  • t's best not to be out under the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun's rays can be most damaging.
  • Find a cool, shady spot so your baby is never in direct sunlight. If there isn't one, an umbrella should work find. Wide brimmed hats will keep the sun off their head and face if you're walking in the sunshine.
  • Protect your baby's eyes with a cute pair of little sunglasses with UV protection. They're safe as well as adorable if you can manage to keep them on their face long enough.
  • Keep your baby's sensitive skin protected with light-colored,  tightly woven clothing. Staying away from reflective surfaces such as water and concrete should also help minimize any chance of sunburn.

How To Deal With Screaming Toodler

A screaming toddler can be a nightmare for parents, especially when you're at the grocery store or a restaurant. Most toddlers go through this stage - in fact, some toddlers go through this stage more than once.

Sometimes it may seem like your toddler is screaming just to frustrate you, but this isn't the case. It's usually a cry for attention, or it may be simply that they just feel like it. Screaming in a big building like a mall can generate a pretty cool echo, so it's only natural that they'll want to experience it.
In a lot of cases, screaming means they want something which is normally something they can't or shouldn't have. My son threw a hissy fit in a store the other week because he wanted out of the cart. I had to cut my shopping trip short and take him out to the car.

Dealing with a screaming toddler

Don't retaliate - Sometimes you may want to scream right back at your child, but believe me, this doesn't work. In the end, it turns out to be a competition to see who is louder and the outcome is nothing but some sore throats and maybe a few tears.

Distraction - A better bet is to use distraction as your weapon against a screaming child. For example, if your child spots some candy in the grocery store and starts screaming, try pointing out some healthy snack options instead. Or you can try playing a game like "Eye Spy". This works well in my case, although a lot of times I have to try a few different things before I'm successful. For my little guy who is almost 2, I point things out that are new to him and get him to repeat what I'm saying. I say it with as much enthusiasm as possible so that he gets excited too.

Prepare - Planning ahead is a great idea when you have errands to run. I always have snacks in my purse along with a sippy cup. If it's going to be a long day, I'll also throw in a few toys. I try and keep separate toys just for our outings so that they're always interested in them because they're special.

Schedule - Before you head out, make sure your toddler is well-rested. A good time to go out is right after nap time or right after she wakes up in the morning. You'll also want to make sure she's got a full stomach. Toddlers can get pretty cranky when they start to get hungry.

Get them involved - Involving the kids as much as possible is also a great way to avoid screaming. My daughter loves to press the "OK" button on the ATM machine when I run to the bank. She also loves to help pick out grocery items. This keeps her mind occupied on the task at hand, and not on something else that she can't have.

Choose family friendly places - If you're planning on eating at a restaurant with your toddler, opt for the more family friendly places rather than a quiet or more formal setting. I always choose one particular restaurant in town when I take my kids out. It's always packed and noisy. That way, if my kids start screaming it won't be as noticeable. I also order a "baby plate" as soon as we sit so the kids can eat right away.

Indoor voice - Something as simple as asking your toddler to use their indoor voice may just do the trick. I'm always surprised at how well it works. I learned that from watching Barney! That funny purple dragon or whatever he is sure comes in handy sometimes. Or is he a dinosaur? I can never remember.

Stay calm - Keeping your voice and your tone quiet and gentle will help set a good example for your child. As much as you might want to raise your voice, maintaining a neutral tone will keep from making the situation worse. This can be extremely hard to achieve, but it's worth it in the end. It will also take a lot of practice, but I'm sure that by the time your toddler has grown up you will have plenty of it!

Bail - If you're out in public and nothing you're trying seems to be working, it might be best to just leave with your toddler, even if it means leaving a grocery cart full of food in the middle of aisle 12.

Acknowledge, but don't give in - If your child is screaming because they're upset about something, acknowledge their feelings and help them work through it. If they're screaming because they want something they can't have, don't give in just to have some peace and quiet. That's only going to make things worse in the long run.

One thing to remember is that this stage will pass. It may be hard to think about that when you're in the middle of a crowded place and you feel like everyone is staring at you because your child is screaming at the top of their lungs. Chances are however, that none of those people will remember you the next day. What matters is your family, and how you deal with them at difficult times. Don't sacrifice an opportunity to encourage good behavior for the sake of a few strangers' opinions.

Hooded Towels - Keep Your Baby Warm

Hooded towels are a great way to dry your baby off because they provide something that other towels do not. Traditional towels act simply as a method of drying off, but we all remember how cold it was to get out of the bath when we were younger. Your child will not have to go through with that scenario ever again because a hooded towel is like a robe and a towel in one.

The hood can be placed over the baby's head, which will help his or her body to retain heat. That way, you will not have to worry about your baby once he or she is out of the bath.

This is important for babies of all ages, as newborns are particularly susceptible to the cold, but even toddlers can get cold very easily. A hooded towel is a very simple way to eliminate this problem and since these towels are very affordable, it will not hurt your pocketbook either.
Keep in mind that one of the reasons why your baby might not like taking baths is because he or she gets cold afterwards. If your baby is having fun splashing around in a bubble bath, you might wonder why it is a struggle to get him or her into the bath next time. One answer could be how cold it is when he or she gets out, which is something that a hooded towel can help to remedy.
Another aspect to consider is how draughty your home is and how that will affect your child. A hooded towel can protect your child against this cold draught, especially since the child will be most vulnerable when he or she is wet.
These hooded towels come in 20 different colors, so you can easily choose a color that your child will enjoy for years to come. Also, since these hooded towels can double as a robe, you can expect your children to get good use out of each towel.
Babies are born with an immune system that is much lower than an adult, which is why parents are told to keep their babies away from potentially risky situations. While a bit of a draught will not make your baby ill, it will increase the chance of your baby coming down with something, especially if this happens continually over time. If a hooded towel can protect the baby even a little bit, it is well worth the price.
Hooded towels are excellent for newborns who are bathed in the sink all the way up to toddlers who are able to bathe themselves because they are quite large. You will definitely be impressed by the hooded towel that you purchase because they have been designed with the needs of babies in mind.
Pick up your hooded towels today and make sure that your baby never has to suffer though a cold after-bath experience ever again. You can make bath time fun again simply by purchasing a hooded towel and keeping your baby warm.

Getting Through the Night - The Benefits and Dangers of Sleeping With Your Baby

When you're averaging a few hours a sleep a night due to a crying baby, you may be tempted to put him or her in bed next to you. Better sleep for you and the baby right? Seems like an easy decision to make. However, visions of rolling over your little one may make the choice a bit more complicated. In the difficult decision to either co-sleep (sleep with your baby) or put baby in his or her crib, what is the right thing to do? With parents on both sides of the crib of this heated debate, one thing is for sure-there are no easy answers. Parents should weigh in the pros and cons of sleeping with their baby and then decide what's right for them and their little one.

Let's start with the negatives. Here are a few cons for sleeping with your baby:
1. Short-term solution may create a long-term problem. The Mayo Clinic says that "bed sharing" makes it difficult for babies to get to sleep on their own. So while you may be temporarily relieved to get your baby asleep quickly, you may have problems down the road with getting them comfortable in their crib.
2. Increase potential risks. Although the risk for Sudden Infant Syndrome or SIDS is controversial, the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that parents avoid sleeping with their babies. In fact, they advise against having babies sleep in adult beds at all.
3. Decreased intimacy with partner. You might feel closer to baby but less so with your partner since you literary may be putting the baby in between you.
If you decide not to sleep with your baby but are still having trouble getting him or her to sleep, you can try other sleep strategies such as letting your baby cry him or herself to sleep, create a bedtime ritual or try the Ferber sleep method. This involves putting your baby to sleep while they are still up but sleepy. You can also put the crib right next to you to minimize the hassle of getting up and walking to the nursery.
Here are some of the positives for sharing your bed with baby:
1. Increased bonding time. Sleeping with your baby is a great way to spend time bonding with baby.
2. It's Convenient. It is convenient to have baby near you especially when you are breastfeeding.
3. It is comforting for baby. Babies who sleep next to mothers may sleep more soundly and cry less.
If reading the pros of sleeping baby makes you want to try it, then remember to be as safe as you can by following these suggestions: make sure to baby on her or his back, do not drink alcohol or take medications that will make you drowsy, and put adequate barriers such as two adults and not pillows to prevent baby from falling off the bed.

Changing Pads - Perfect For Even the Most Difficult Babies

In a perfect world, all babies would lay perfectly still while being changed and concerned parents would not have to struggle with them. Unfortunately, babies get cranky and they will try to fight you every step along the way. For this reason, an ordinary changing pad simply will not cut it, as these changing pads do not provide the parents with the safety devices they need to make their jobs easier.

Once a baby starts struggling, the entire changing process gets much more difficult. This is because once the baby starts fighting with you, you will, in turn, begin fighting with the baby. This will cause the baby to fight even harder and before you know it, the baby could injure him or her self. Struggling with a baby and trying to change him or her at the same time is a nearly impossible task, which is where a changing pad can come in handy.
A good changing pad can keep your baby in place while you are changing him or her, which will make both of your lives much easier. The safety belt will keep your baby gently in place and the padded sides will make sure that your baby is completely comfortable. These changing pads will not hold your baby down, but will rather make sure that you do not have to worry about the baby falling, so you can complete the change with as little hassle as possible.

Babies that are difficult to change will often become more difficult over time, as they learn that the harder they struggle, the more likely it is for the parent to give up. These changing pads, however, are extremely comfortable for the baby, so he or she will not feel threatened by the situation. Rather than placing your baby on a hard table, you can place the baby in a changing pad, so the baby will feel as though he or she is cozy in bed.
Over time, these changing pads will actually make your baby enjoy changing time. You will not have to struggle anymore because the changing pad will be like a second bed for the child and will promote relaxation.

This is particularly beneficial as the baby gets older, as these changing pads can be used until the baby is about 18-months. When a baby gets to that age, he or she is already able to walk, which can make changing even more difficult. The baby is so longer as helpless and is more likely to try to get away, which a changing pad can prevent.
You do not have to struggle anymore because these changing pads are made specifically for this reason. A changing pad is beneficial for the baby because it will keep him or her comfortable and safe while he or she is being changed and it is beneficial for the parent because it will make the changing process easier while giving them peace of mind.

For these reasons, a changing pad is something that you should definitely look into.

Guards to Protect Your Baby

There is nothing more fun to do for a beginner walker than to explore their new surroundings. They can and will get into and try to touch everything that they can reach. When your little one starts walking their legs are wobbly and unstable and they constantly fall. One item that you can purchase to protect their little heads and faces is guards.

There are many different types of guards for your home. You have corner guards, table pads, pinch guards, and ones for the fireplace. They also come in different colors to match your furniture as well as different lengths and widths.
Corner guards do exactly what their name says, they guard sharp corners. Place them on all sharp or square edges of furniture to protect your child from getting hurt.
Table pads can be purchased to go around an entire table for added safety.
DigitSaverTM has come up with a item that you put on each side of a door knob and this helps keep the large doors from slamming on little fingers.
Fireplace guards are very important to help protect your child from falling and cutting their head open.
All of these items have been improved over the years and they play a very important role in protecting your child, so don't hesitate to use them because you are afraid that they might damage your furniture. Furniture is replaceable and besides, every parent that you know is going through and doing the same thing to everything in their home to protect their children as well.

The Importance of the One-Month Checkup For the Health of Your Newborn

Your baby's health was important when it was still in the womb. You ate healthy, junk food cravings notwithstanding, you took your prenatal vitamins, you exercised, and you saw your doctor on a regular basis. But, the health of your baby doesn't end when it's born. It continues throughout its life and it starts with the one-month checkup.

Not long after you bring your baby home from the hospital it is very important to set up a checkup. You don't have to wait an entire month as this checkup can take place between two to four weeks after your baby is born. However, if you find that your baby isn't doing well, or doesn't appear to be healthy in any way, then by all means go see your doctor immediately. Don't wait a month!
Why one month you ask? This is about how long it's going to take for you to start getting to know your baby. Within a month you should be more familiar with its eating and sleeping habits, how often it eliminates, whether or not it's colicky, etc. You will come to know your baby more so than when it was in the womb. You'll know if something doesn't appear to be going right, or if something seems unusual.
At the one-month checkup, you'll have a chance have a chance to have your questions answered. Make sure to write them all down so you don't forget. As a matter of fact, you can even start a sort of journal for your baby and bring that with you. Make copious notes, and ask all the questions you want. Your doctor is there to help you, and put you at ease.
Some things you may ask are what types of medical supplies you should have in your house to care for your baby in case of a small accident or if it becomes ill. Something else that can be disconcerting is the thought of your child choking or suddenly stopping breathing. You should definitely ask your doctor what you must do if these situations occur, as knowing these can save your baby's life.
Make sure to keep your doctors phone number in a handy place. Another phone number you need to have readily available is the AAPCC (American Association of Poison Control). The number is 1-800-22-1222. Call it immediately if you suspect that your baby has ingested any harmful substances. Make sure to note what you suspect your baby has eaten, and what symptoms appear to be present.
Always remember that much like grown-up health, baby health is all about prevention. The one-month checkup is the perfect time for your doctor to assess your baby's health, and catch anything early. Prevention is usually the best medicine so finding issues with your baby's health now can prevent bigger health issues later.

Choosing Appropriate Shoes For Your Toddler

Choosing the right toddler shoes may seem like an easy decision for many parents. They simply pick out the most affordable pair of shoes at their local superstore. However, before you pick up that pair of cheaply constructed slip ons, there are few things you need to know about buying shoes. Here are the top four things to look for when you are shopping for toddler shoes.

1. Quality Of Construction
It makes a lot of sense to buy inexpensive shoes for your toddler. After all, toddlers and older children definitely outgrow shoes faster than adults do. You may wince at spending $20 or more on a pair of shoes that your child will only wear for the next six months. However, cheaply made shoes will wear out much faster than shoes that have quality construction. Even if you save a few bucks on the shoes to begin with, you'll have to replace them faster than better made shoes. Quality shoes can even be passed down from child to child. The easiest way to tell if the shoes are made well is to check the stitching. If the stitches are glued instead of sewn, they'll be more likely to fall apart.
2. The Right Fit
Finding shoes with the right fit will make a difference in how long your child can wear the shoes. This is especially important if you are buying your child's shoes online. You can have your child's feet measured at a shoe store without actually buying shoes there, or you can use one of several sizing charts found online. Once you figure out your child's exact size, you should buy a half size larger so they can grow into the shoes.
3. Flexible Soles
The trend several years ago was to buy toddler shoes with very thick soles. The theory was that the thick, hard soles will help support the child's feet so that they can learn to walk. However, recently a new style of shoes for toddlers has become very popular in the market. Flexible soles allow your child to feel the ground beneath them which helps contribute to their balance. Since they can balance more easily, they learn to walk faster.
4. Plain Designs
You can find a lot of toddler shoes out there that feature cartoon and movie characters. However cute these characters might be, you're going to have a hard time coordinating these shoes with your child's clothes. When you look for shoes for your child, especially when you are getting quality shoes, you should find shoes that will work for a variety of outfits. This way you'll get more use out of one pair of shoes. When you find a plain design, your child will be less likely to refuse to wear their shoes because they are suddenly over their favorite character.
When you keep these four characteristics in mind while shopping for your toddler's shoes, you'll be sure to find a pair that will last and that your child will feel comfortable in.

Tips For Saving Money on Baby Diapers

There are a lot of ways to save money on our baby diapers, and some of them aren't as obvious as it would seem, and we'll get into one that a lot of parents don't think of when setting up their diaper savings strategy.

First of all we all know that baby diapers can be among the most expensive part of raising a baby in its early years, and so anything we can do to cut down on that expense will save us significant dollars over a year, and throughout the entire period our babies are in diapers.
I'm not going to get into the obvious aspects of saving money on diapers, as everyone knows to look for coupons and go online to get deals, and also to sign up at brand Web sites to get deals and free diapers when they come available; usually through email communications that are occasionally sent to us after we sign up.
Rather, what I'd like to do is concentrate on a couple of strategies you can employ that will save you money before all these other things.
First, there are ways to get free diapers, and let's face it, that's the best kind when you're looking to stretch you dollars.
The best way to begin your search is to find out where the nearest pregnancy center is in your area and contact them. Usually they will have free diapers available on a weekly basis, or at minimum, have free samples you can take home and try. Many places all you have to do is sign up and you can get free diapers consistently from them. How good is that?
So don't forget to try this out as part of your overall diaper savings strategy. They may not last for the entire week, but if you can get two or three days worth of diapers, you could save up to $10 a week, depending on where you live; maybe more. Add that up over a year and it's worth the effort.
The next major step in savings is to buy in bulk, and make sure you have a calculator on hand when at the store to add up the savings. There are times when a smaller package of diapers is less expensive than a larger package when including a coupon, or adding up the numbers and dividing them to make sure the price per diaper is known to you. The point is to buy in bulk, but do the math to ensure you're getting the best deal.
Another secondary benefit of buying in bulk is the gas savings when going out to get them. Don't underestimate secondary savings when buying goods. And because we need so many diapers, the amount we save by buying in bulk, along with savings on gas and wear and tear on the car, are not insignificant.

These feelings only serve to take away the pleasure you should feel when feeding your baby. Savor and make the most of each feeding time by ensuring you're sitting comfortably and providing your baby with all the attention it requires.

The milk which you will feed your baby is commonly known as formula milk and is specially designed to provide all of the vitamins, nutrients and minerals your baby requires. The majority of formula milk is manufactured from cow's milk, that has been specifically treated to ensure it is easily digestible and its nutritional elements are as close to breast milk as is possible. There are a variety of brands to select from and your midwife will be able to advise you regarding the specific brands best suited to your situation.

Bottle-feeding formula compound is in the form of powder which you make up with cooled boiled water. Do not add more powder than is necessary given to strong a mix can be harmful to your baby.
Pre-prepared former milk's are also now available in the marketplace in the form of bottles and cartons. Although more expensive than home prepared formula, it is very useful when out and about and can last unopened for several weeks.
Preparing a formula milk is a relatively simple process. Simply adhere to the instructions on the packet or tin making up sufficient amounts to last your baby 24 hours. Always use sterilised bottles teats and lids and store in your refrigerator until required. Do not reuse remnants of formula milk given it has a strong potential of being a breeding ground for bacteria. The majority of babies are more than content to drink their bottles at a room temperature however if your baby prefers warm milk, simply heat the bottle in a bottle warmer or in a bowl of hot water. Always test the temperature of the milk before giving it to your baby. Do this by sprinkling a small amount on the underside of your wrist given this is one of the most sensitive areas of your body.

Understanding Your Baby's Teeth

A large proportion of babies at around six months of age start to see their milk teeth emerge. By the age of 2 1/2 the majority of all 20 of your baby's first teeth would usually have appeared. Each tooth is constituted of two sections, the Crown, which is visible within the mouth, and the root, which secures the tooth into the jawbone, concealed by the gum. The coating of the tooth is made up from enamel. This provides a strong and robust protection for the Crown and also provides a strong plate for chewing. Given the enamel has not formed to its fall capacity during the early stages, the addition of calcium and other minerals are essential between six and 12 months to ensure it is strengthened.

The minerals required to strengthen the enamel are located within the saliva and plaque in your child's mouth and under ordinary circumstances will gradually accumulate upon the teeth. The problem is however that the calcium and phosphate contained within the compound of the enamel, regularly come under attack from harmful acids that are manufactured by the bacteria residing in plaque. The bacteria utilises carbohydrates to generate the acid. You will be aware of the need for your baby to consume carbohydrates and thereby increasing the acids which is fine. However, food and drink containing significant amounts of simple sugars such as sucrose and fructose, allows for the increased manufacture of these acids which can lead to damaged teeth.
Not only the quantities of sugar your baby consumes which affects your babies teeth, but also the frequency that he or she consumes sugary food and drink. Liquids consumed slowly or even sugary foods eaten over an extended period of time, ensure the sugar content of the mouth remains high thereby ensuring the calcium and phosphates are being removed for longer and less time is available to substitute them.
Generically speaking, the lower the sugar content of drinks and food the more beneficial they are for your teeth given it is the total sugar levels, and not just the added sugars which count. It is for this reason you should not add sugars to your infants food or drinks and why it is standard practice to dilute concentrated drinks and provide it to your baby in a training cup and not in a feeding bottle.

Protecting Your Child With Baby Gates

There are several ways of child-proofing your home. One of them is baby gates.
Imagine a house gate miniaturized to somewhat like a play size for your little child. That is what baby gates more or less looks like. They help prevent your child from meeting that fall accident or other accidents. They help stop your child from going into places in your home where you don't want him in. They also help keep your toddler out of those areas where he could just break those vases. They could also keep your child out of the way when you need to tidy up on a certain room in your home.

There are a lot of types of child safety gates that you could pick from. A Baby gate could fit on your stair tops and your doorway or could stand on its own.
The older child safety gates were accordion-styled. These were recalled since they could trap babied in their v-shaped openings in the body. They could also trip adults when being stepped over due to their protruding points on top of the gate. Some earlier types of gates for your baby also conveniently provided toe-holds for the child to climb over the gate, causing more fall accidents.
However, contemporary types of baby gates now come in wood, metal, plastic or cloth. They could swing to be opened or slide or roll out. They would have flat surfaces, not providing that toe-hold for the toddler and prevent accidents. And which baby gate to use in your house all depends on where you're putting the baby gate, how your house was built and how it looks like inside.
The two basic types of baby gates are pressure-mounted baby gates and hardware-mounted baby gates.
The most common type of baby gate is pressure-mounted baby gates. They do not need mounting tools to install and are very mobile. They allow an adult to step over them when passing through but stop the toddlers from doing so. They would need to be mounted on solid wall surfaces. Hollow walls or uneven surfaces do not provide the amount of strength required for the baby gate to be installed. These baby gates apply pressure on where you will mount it so if against a hollow wall, the wall will get a dent and will eventually give way, destroying the wall and weakening it as well. Uneven surfaces would not allow enough pressure to build on the mounted area making the gate unstable.
Hardware-mounted baby gates are permanently screwed on the mounted area with the use of your mounting tools. Install these gates on solid walls as well to provide the support for the mounting of the gate. This would also make the gate table enough to secure your child. These are often times used for stairways. They should not have fixed horizontal bars that could make you trip on it when you pass through.

Breastfeeding - What is the Best Way to Feed Your Baby?

As a mother, you want to give the best nourishment to your children. As for newly-born infants, the best nourishment comes from the breast milk of their mothers. Therefore, it is important to know the ins and outs of proper breastfeeding.
A mother can do breastfeeding as long as she wants; and as long as she deemed it needed for her baby.

The advantages of breastfeeding include the following:
• It helps to fight certain infections.
• It helps to prevent allergies.
• It is the best way to stop baby's tantrums.

• It is the best means to help a child who is hurt.
As women, we should know how breastfeeding affects us and our newborn baby. We have to be abreast of the scientific information needed in order to utilize its advantages further. There must be an initial stimulation of breastfeeding because it is a fact that breasts stop producing milk after giving birth. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breast milk as the prime source of nutrients and feeding for your tots.
These are other advantages of breastfeeding:
• It aids you, the mother, to lose weight.
• It is considered as the cheapest; and, at the same time most effective means to feed your child.
From breastfeeding, the baby could receive amino acids in proteins, vitamins and enzymes. All these contribute to the complete nutrition that the baby needs at this stage.
Breastfeeding can be done 3 minutes right after giving birth. The first little sucks and bites and the first milk produced by mothers, called colostrum is the best source of nutrition for the newborn baby. When the nipples are stimulated, it also aids to stop uterine bleeding by enabling the uterus to contract.
The time comes when the baby can open one's eyes, and place its fist into the mouth, this is the signal that the mother can now offer her breasts for feeding. Unless prescribed by doctor, never give newborn baby water filled with sugar.
The last and most important thing to know and understand is the proper manner to breastfeed a child. Here is how it should be done:
• Press gently a few drops from your nipples until it is already moistened.
• Now, encourage the baby to open his/her mouth through massaging the lips as gently as possible.
• Finally, after breastfeeding is over; do not pull your nipples away from the baby's mouth immediately. Do it gradually and tenderly; you could start by inserting your finger into the corner of the baby's mouth.

Changing Pad Covers - Protecting Your Investment

While changing pads are not particularly expensive, the price could really add up if you constantly have to replace them. Because of this, it is important that you purchase a cover, as this will make the entire changing process much easier. These covers can easily be removed from the pad and thrown in the washing machine, so your baby will always have a clean place to be changed.

Another great feature about these changing pad covers is that they come in a variety of different colors. Therefore, you can purchase a few of them if you want to mix it up a little bit. Your baby will appreciate having a clean surface every time he or she is changed, as will anyone else who happens to use the pad. Purchasing a changing pad is a great idea, but it is not complete without a cover.
The design of the changing pad cover is simple, as it slides over the pad and is held in place by elastic, similar to how a sheet would be kept on your baby. In many ways, the cover is just like a sheet, except it is made from a soft material that your baby will enjoy.
These pad covers also come with slits for the safety belt, so you can still utilize all of the pad's safety features while using the cover. At the end of the day, this cover is a mandatory investment because it will save you from cleaning problems and will maximize the life of your pad.
When choosing the color and design of your changing pad cover, make sure that you take a number of different things into consideration. If you are the type of person who always wants to match, then invest in a cover that is similar in color to your baby's change room. If you plan on taking your pad cover on the road with you, then an earthy tone is probably the best way to go.

Better yet, purchase a few different pad covers so that you will always have a clean one around. That way, if one of your covers is in the wash, you can simply put another one on the pad and not have to worry about it. These pad covers truly take everything into consideration, which is why they are the perfect accessory for your changing pad.
Also keep in mind the health issues that go along with keeping a clean changing station. If your changing station is messy, your baby will experience some health risks, so always keep the changing station clean with one of these changing pad covers. There are too many things that can go wrong if you do not have the right changing pad cover. Also remember that these particular covers are specially made to fit the top of the line changing pads that are also offered, making them the best changing pad covers to purchase as well.

Baby Teething Problems

Usually teething in your baby starts from month 6 and is the result of some inflammation, resulting in swelling of the gums.
While for some babies it does not appear to be a problem at all, other tots might find it quite painful.
There is usually a sequence in how babies get their teeth-the lower incisors first, followed by the top incisors, then the molars and canines follow.

Symptoms associated with teething are the following:
Ear ache - Your baby may continuously touch his ear as the pain in the gums get transferred to the ear.
Dribbling of the mouth - You will notice that your baby has more than usual saliva around the mouth. If you stick your finger into his mouth, he will grab it feverishly and try to bite it. In fact, a baby in the teething stage will try to bite everything. This is because he/she wants to get rid of the "itching" gums.
Running stomach - Usually this time your baby's stool is abnormal with a high acid content. This might cause a rash and ordinary bum cream must be applied to get rid of the rash. But, if diarrhea is suspected, rather take your baby to a doctor.
Other symptoms include a higher than normal temperature, irritable, not sleeping well. If in doubt, look at your baby's gums and see if he/she wants to bite everything.
How can you ease the pain associated with teething in your baby:
Give your baby a teething ring or something fairly hard to chew on like a carrot or apple. If these items are cool, like being stacked in a fridge, the better. This is an old but well-proven method of soothing a child's' gums.
Safety tip: Just be careful of small pieces getting into the baby's throat that could lead to choking of the child.
If possible get some teething powers and gels available on the market that can help with the inflammation of the gums. The gels and powers contain an anesthetic for pain relief.
However, if the pain persists and your baby has a problem with sleeping and keeps on crying, it would be better to get some prescribed medicine from your GP
